Cosmetic dental practices in the United States have grown exponentially, thanks partly to television makeover shows. In a world where no decent celebrity would be caught without a perfect smile, it’s no wonder the average Joe wants to be ready for his close-up. According to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey of 9,000 practices, aesthetic/cosmetic services provided in their offices have grown an average of 12.5 percent in the last five years. Some doctors have experienced as much as a 40 percent increase.
TYPICAL COSMETIC PATIENT The typical patient isn’t limited to the “young and restless” or your average Baby Boomer. The AACD study revealed 70.2 percent of those inquiring about cosmetic dentistry were between the ages of 31 to 50. Income levels ranged widely to include everyone from stay-at-home moms to blue-collar workers.
TYPICAL COSMETIC PRACTICE Aesthetic dentists are no longer found only in Beverly Hills or Manhattan. Nearly 60 percent are found in suburban America, and this correlates with the 31 to 50-year-olds in the suburbs who are busy commuting daily to the city.
IS COSMETIC DENTISTRY REALLY ON THE RISE? Roughly 48 percent of dental practices reported earning $700,000 yearly for cosmetic dentistry, with an average of $661,000 annually. A clear indicator of changing times is that a third of all practices reported more than 2,000 active patients to spend an average of more than $400 per visit. Over five years, nearly 40 percent of practices responding to the survey reported growth of over 15 percent in the number of aesthetic procedures performed.
MOST COMMONLY REQUESTED PROCEDURES Teeth whitening was a clear leader, with 29 percent of patients requesting this simple procedure. Yet it makes up only 6.5 percent of all cosmetic procedures performed. Preventative care still plays a prominent role, garnering 25.1 percent of all procedures.
CONCERNS Patients primarily express concern about cost, and one-third of all survey respondents listed price as the primary reason people decide not to have a smile makeover. Fortunately, patient financing makes cosmetic dentistry more accessible, with 81.1 percent of practices offering financial assistance or advice.
