How Do You Bleach Teeth When One Tooth is Darker Than the Others?
There are many types of bleaching. Usually, the bleaching of teeth that we are talking about is done externally, which means that all the teeth are going to get whiter.
Now, what if there is a tooth, especially in the front area, that is much darker than the other teeth? Well, usually, that is because of the root canal therapy that has been done on the front tooth.
There is a method we use, it is called Internal Bleaching, in which we are going inside the tooth. So what we do in that case, the first thing we do is to make sure that the root canal is not leaking, so a radiograph or an x-ray is needed for that.
Then we use a method in which we go through the tooth and we use a technique called walking bleach. Walking bleach is basically the use of sodium perborate, which we go ahead and apply inside the tooth and we seal the tooth for two to three days. Then, when the patient comes back, we see how much whiter a dark tooth can get. There is a possibility of redoing the internal bleaching multiple times!
Usually, in one treatment the tooth gets so much whiter and the patient is so happy. Why? Because now, if the tooth is getting whiter, the same as the color of the adjacent tooth, the patient does not need to get a crown or a veneer done, so everything is solved conservatively. Of course the access hole must be also restored with strong whiter composite material after satisfactory results have been reached.
In case it didn’t go as white as we needed, the patient can come for a second visit and we do the same sodium perborate walking bleach technique again. Usually, we get great results, so you don’t need a crown or a dental veneer. This cosmetic dental treatment avoids the hardest thing in dentistry, which is to match two teeth, especially in the front, using one dark tooth to match the color of adjacent teeth with porcelain veneer .
